FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What freight services does SET Logistics offer?

SET coordinates full truckload (FTL), less-than-truckload (LTL), specialized and oversized, expedited, and disaster relief shipping across the U.S. and Canada, on flatbed, step-deck, RGN, hot shot, dry van, and reefer equipment.

What is full truckload (FTL) shipping?

Your freight gets the entire trailer, moving direct from pickup to delivery with no other cargo on board. It’s the fastest, most secure option for shipments that fill a trailer or can’t share space.

What is LTL shipping, and when should I use it?

Less-than-truckload combines your shipment with others heading the same direction, so you pay only for the space you use. It generally fits freight under roughly 10,000 pounds that doesn’t need a dedicated trailer, and won’t be bothered by transloading, temporary stops or re-arrangement along the way.

What counts as an oversized load?

As a general rule, freight wider than 8’6″, taller than 13’6″, longer than standard trailer length, or heavier than 80,000 pounds gross requires oversize or overweight permits. Requirements vary by state and route, so SET confirms permit needs on every quoted load.

What's the difference between a flatbed, step-deck, and RGN?

A flatbed is an open deck for freight up to about 8’6″ tall. A step-deck drops the rear trailer deck to carry taller loads, up to roughly 10’2″, without height permits. An RGN (removable gooseneck) sits lowest and detaches at the front so wheeled or tracked equipment can drive directly onto the trailer.

When are pilot cars or escorts required?

Generally when a load exceeds about 12’ wide, 14’ high, or 90’ long, though every state sets its own thresholds. SET determines escort requirements during quoting and arranges pilot cars as part of the move, so the cost is in your quote, not a surprise after.

Can SET handle superloads?

Yes, as a coordinator. For true superloads (150+ tons, multi-axle configurations, escorts, route surveys), SET manages the move end to end, partnering with specialized heavy-haul carriers on the lift itself while running the standard-haulable freight around it.

What is expedited shipping?

A dedicated truck with priority scheduling, often team drivers, for freight that can’t wait: line-down situations, project deadlines, high-value goods.

Does SET offer refrigerated (reefer) shipping?

Yes. SET arranges temperature-controlled trailers with the same tracking and single point of contact as our dry freight.

What is disaster relief logistics?

When storms, floods, or other emergencies strike, SET coordinates urgent freight into affected areas: generators, water, building materials, and equipment, working around closed routes and compressed timelines.

Does SET handle tarping and securement requirements?

Yes. Tarping, chains, straps, bracing, and specialized securement are specified on SET’s shipping documentation to contracted carriers before the truck is dispatched, with freight only assigned to carriers equipped and experienced to haul it right. Load securement capabilities for sensitive equipment is a key part of SET’s carrier selection process.

How is freight priced?

Freight pricing variables include lane, equipment type, weight and dimensions, cargo value, timing, and current market capacity. Permitted loads add permit and escort costs. Every load is quoted individually, so you pay for what your freight actually needs.

How far in advance should I book?

Standard truckload: 24 to 48 hours is usually enough. Permitted oversize: 3 to 5 business days should be expected to secure permits. Superloads with route surveys: weeks. When in doubt, call early. We’ll tell you honestly what the timeline needs.

Does SET ship internationally?

SET frequently coordinates cross-border freight between the U.S. and Canada. For overseas freight, or for Mexico, ask. We’ll tell you straight what we can handle and what we’d refer to a specialist.
